Synopsis
Focusing on connecting understanding of nursing research with evidence-based practice, this text teaches students how to read, critique, and utilize research reports. The text explains each step of the research process and is organized around student-centered questions that may be encountered while using research. These questions include how the conclusions were reached, which patients the conclusions apply to, how the study was done, and why it was done that way.
New to this edition are updates on informatics in nursing research and the role of research in shaping policy, and updated articles reflecting the current trends and issues in nursing practice. This new edition has also been streamlined for ease of reading to the beginning nursing student.
Reviewer: Diane M Tomasic, EdD, RN(Slippery Rock University )
Description: This third edition nursing research book comes with an updated title (second edition: Understanding Nursing Research: Reading and Using Research in Evidence-Based Practice) and adds two new authors to the original coauthors. It continues with the presentation of the usual research process course content by beginning with the discussion and conclusion and ending with the background and problem and includes an online component for faculty and students.
Purpose: The authors intend the book to provide readers with a basic understanding of the research process and motivate nursing students and baccalaureate-prepared nurses to read and use the research evidence relevant to their practice.
Audience: The target audience is baccalaureate nursing students taking an introductory research course.
Features: After an introduction to the use of research in evidence-based nursing practice, the book is organized around the usual sections of a research report. Since most readers of research start with the conclusion, this book follows that same path by beginning with the conclusion and ending with the problem, just the reverse of usual research books. The chapter begins with a clinical case showing what information is needed from the research literature. Throughout the chapters, research articles relate to the clinical case and show the information needed from the literature. Qualitative and quantitative research articles are used to show how knowledge is built. Each chapter has specific learning activities. The third edition has essentially the same chapter titles and content as the previous edition. The content has been updated as have the research articles available in the appendix. The online component for faculty consists of PowerPoint with images, journal articles, assignments and answers, instructor manual, and test-generator questions. The student resources include an article for each chapter. The student needs to set up an account to access the student resources.
Assessment: This book continues to be a valuable contribution for introductory research courses. It gives students a good understanding of the language and concepts of the research process, but it does not prepare students to conduct research.
